Gemstone Guide: Natural Diamonds, Lab – Grown Diamonds, Moissanite, and Zircon

Diamonds have always charmed people with their special allure and high value in the jewelry world. But with tech progress, we now have not just natural diamonds but also lab – grown diamonds, moissanite, and zircon. Knowing how these gemstones differ is really important for consumers picking out jewelry. This article will look at the differences between these four gems to help you choose wisely.

    Natural Diamonds

As the name shows, natural diamonds form in nature. They start as carbon that turns into crystals under high – pressure and high – temperature deep in the Earth’s crust over billions of years. Natural diamonds are famous for being hard, shiny, and having a high refractive index, which is why they’re called the “King of Gems.”

The price of natural diamonds depends on their quality, based on the “4Cs”: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Colorless or almost colorless diamonds are the most wanted and cost the most. Because there aren’t many high – quality natural diamonds, especially really good ones, they’re very expensive.

    Lab – Grown Diamonds

Lab – grown diamonds are made in labs by copying how natural diamonds form. They’re almost the same as natural diamonds in how they look and feel, so it’s hard to tell them apart without special tools. Like natural diamonds, lab – grown diamonds are graded by the “4Cs” but are much cheaper for the same quality.

There are two main ways to make lab – grown diamonds: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). These methods can make a lot of good – quality diamonds fast, which helps meet market needs. Lab – grown diamonds have changed the diamond market, giving consumers more options.
